- Can't live without accumulating CDs?
- Brulerie St-Denis. 286-9158. Cool, good coffees.
- La Chartreuse. St-Denis above Sherbrooke. Pretentious,
expensive, and not that good. Live violin.
- Le Daphne (salon de the). St-Denis and Roy. Really nice.
- Duc de Lorraine.
- Eldorado. Also St-Laurent above Laurier. good coffees.
Good desserts.
- L'Ile Verte. McGill below Ste-Catherine. Very good tiramisu.
- Kilo. St-Laurent above Laurier (on West side).
If you like cheesecakes and pies. Cool ambiance.
(This is not my forte, as I will only drink to uninhibit myself
in life-or-death situations :-)
- Exotika. Laurier East of Parc. Also a cafe and a restaurant
(3 floors). Cool place. Different clientele at different
times.
- Whisky Cafe. St-Viateur at St-Laurent (right where my parked
car was bashed by a speeding driver last Friday while
I happily tangoed). All possible Whiskys, even the most
expensive ones.
- Duc de Lorraine.
Cote des Neiges above Queen Mary. Excellent croissants.
The Best Tarte aux Pommes after mom's.
(Back to cafes)
- L'Eclair (or whatever its new name is), in the Faubourg.
(Not to be mixed up with the other (bad) patisserie
in the Faubourg.) The best eclairs in Montreal,
by far; (I'm talking about the eclairs with "creme
patissiere", of course, the ones with Chantilly
don't matter).
Other very good stuff too, such as the Mochas.
- Patisserie Belge. Parc, below Milton. Try the Cointreau.
- Au Bon Pain. Maybe slightly less refined than the Duc,
but the strawberry tart is better here than anywhere else
(except at home, of course).
- Kouigh Aman. 3447A Mt-Royal (a little west of St-Denis).
From Brittany. Try their specialty, the kouigh aman.
The one and only...
- Fairmount Bagels. Fairmount between St-Urbain and Clarke.
24-hour factory.
Believe me, these things are always fresh.
- Andalos: Bakery. Open till 11 every day. The best bread,
mneiche, and lahm b'aajin in town.
- Adonis: Supermarket. On Decarie. Tricky. Some things are fresh
or cheap there, others are old or expensive.
- Antabli: Fruit cocktails and ice cream. Also on Decarie.
Very good but expensive ($6/cocktail).
- Daou. Restaurant.
- Patisserie Mahrouse. 1010 Liege (angle Acadie). 279-1629.
The only decent middle-eastern pastries in town.
ps. There's another Mahrouse on Acadie, and the two are
apparently owned by brothers; I hear this one is better.
Try these places:
-
- Archambault. Berri and Ste-Catherine. Widest selection,
highest prices. Cannot listen to CDs before buying.
- HMV. Ste-Catherine around Peel. Best prices, 1 free CD for
every 10 purchased.
- Renaud-Bray. Check out the Cote-des-Neiges location. Best
service. Extremely nice and knowledgeable people.
