The CGM scanner is attached to the machine named "toro", the black IBM machine on the desk opposite the door. You must log in to toro to operate the scanner. You may log in remotely as long as you have your environment correctly set up to allow X clients to display on your screen; generally "ssh -X toro" suffices. The scanner may show up either as /dev/scanner or as /dev/sg0. These devices are equivalent, so it doesn't matter which you use. Scan an image using "xsane" --------------------------- 1. Log into toro. 2. Run xsane. 3. On the XSane options panel, select the correct scan mode: Lineart, Grayscale, etc. 4. Click "Acquire Preview" on the preview window. 5. Adjust the scanner controls (brightness, etc), looping back to step 4. The preview scan size is adjustable using the second-from-right menu. 6. When you are ready for the final scan, set the filename on the main panel. If you want to scan only part of the preview image, click and drag the outline box. Click "Start". View and Manipulate the image ----------------------------- Use "display" to view the output file. Use "convert out.png beauty.jpg" to convert to other file formats. Both of these tools are part of ImageMagick, and have extensive documentation in their manpages. Use "gimp" to manipulate the image. If you know Adobe Photoshop, you should be at-home with the GIMP. The GIMP has a 300-page manual, viewable by pressing "f1". The "File/Acquire" menu allows you to directly access the scanner from inside the GIMP. This uses the same "xsane" interface described above.
